Riddle me this, Batman...

I have decided to acknowledge this blog's existence by sharing my thoughts on the next Batman movie's villian, assuming Christopher and Jonathon Nolan go ahead with it.  Here are Batman villains' major movie appearances to date:

The Joker (Batman: The Movie, Batman, The Dark Knight
The Penguin (Batman: The Movie, Batman Returns)
Dent/Two Face (Batman, Batman Forever, The Dark Knight)
The Riddler (Batman: The Movie, Batman Forever)
Catwoman (Batman: The Movie, Batman Returns)
Mr. Freeze (Batman and Robin, Subzero)
The Phantasm (The Mask of The Phantasm)
            Poison Ivy (Batman and Robin)
            Bane (Batman and Robin)
            Scarecrow (Batman Begins)
            Ra's Al Ghul (Batman Begins)

Here's my thing:  It would be nice if some different Batman villains were brought into the silver screen stardom.  Certainly, they go for well known characters, but there are other great villains.  I wouldn't mind seeing villains such as The Clock King or Clayface in line for a part in a new Batman movie.  As a side note I think doing The Phantasm would be super super super cool, but unfortunately The Phantasm is kind of self-contained in The Mask of The Phantasm.  Another interesting angle would be invlving Ra's Al Ghul's daughter's.  I guess that ends my honorable mention list, SO... here are my picks for the next Batman villain or two (two, because both Nolan Batman's had two classic villains per movie)

#1
THE RIDDLER
This is, as it seems, the most likely pick for the next villain.  I have read that Nolan was seriously considering The Riddler as the villain in The Dark Knight before ultimately deciding upon The Joker.  The Riddler is a less used criminal and would be, I think, amazingly portrayed by Nolan.  Also, the talks of either Johnny Depp or David Tennant donning the green suit and question mark tie make this a really exciting possibility.  The Riddler was always my favourite bad guy when I was really little watching
Batman: The Animated Series.

#2
THE PENGUIN
Another favourite of mine, The Penguin needs a new presentation.  After Batman Returns, no one has wanted to get near him.  Please, bring him back.

#3
MR. FREEZE
I can't even begin to imagine how cool a new Mr. Freeze would be.  Haha, get it?  Cool...

#4
THE MAD HATTER
My fourth and final pick is the Mad Hatter because he's really really neat AND there is a lot of room for him being in the movies.  He is the only one of my picks that has not appeared in a film before.

Technically Scarecrow was in Dark Knight... for about five seconds, but still. Also, you forgot Harvey Dent/Two Face who has been in Batman Forever and The Dark Knight.

I seriously hope there's going to be a third Nolan Batman movie, but he's hesitant. His argument for not doing one at this point is "How many good 'third' movies have you seen?" It's true that a lot of third-in-series films have been subpar and I can see his point. However, I'm someone who loves a continued story, so as long as the third movie is good, I'd like to see it.

As for a villain... well I'm not sure. Not being an original comicbook fan, I don't know much about Batman villains other than what I've read from Wikipedia summaries.

Everybody keeps bringing up the Riddler, but I think he would be perceived as too similar to the Joker. I know he isn't but it's all about perception! I see Mr. Freeze as being too farfetched to fit comfortably into Nolan's Batman series, plus his last appearance on film was an utter disaster. Honestly, I've never heard of the Mad Hatter, at least not the Batman version so I can't comment on that. I personally think the Penguin would be the most viable of all the villains you mention here, although I read somewhere that Nolan thought he would be too difficult to portray realistically.

The next movie is going to go to one of two directions: either the villain will play a much smaller role because of the inevitable tension between Batman and the Gotham Police or the villain will have to be so big and so dangerous that chasing Batman is no longer a priority for Gordon.

I don't see Nolan going with a "bigger" villain. That's the approach that usually makes "three" movies terrible, plus it would be difficult to beat the Joker in terms of villainy. I think the villain will play a smaller role in the next film (if there is one.) The real story will be about Bruce Wayne and James Gordon and the consequences of their decision to deceive the people of Gotham.

Oops... I've inserted Harvey...

The whole Police chasing Batman is what would make use of The Phantasm interesting, because the idea there was that everyone thought that Batman was killing criminals.

I think you are right... the next film will probably have to concentrate on the whole Batman is wanted deal. I just hope he goes somewhere with it.
